How did I get fat and what can I do about it?

The latest research is showing us that even 5 extra pounds of fat is directly correlated to insulin imbalance.  Now, it used to be thought that only diabetics had insulin issues, but more and more, science is determining that a wide variety of health issues, including diabetes, hypoglycemia, heart disease, dementia, high blood pressure, heart disease, IBS / IBD, and even cancer are all directly correlated to insulin resistance.  The good news is that it isn’t too late to turn around your health and there is a lot that can be done to help you.

 

If you have weight or insulin issues, the first thing you need to do is to educate yourself.  Knowledge is power!  Read everything you can on regulating blood glucose and insulin levels naturally.  A great place to start is Dr. Mark Hyman’s book, The Blood Sugar Solution (Little, Brown, 2012).  Another author who I recommend to my patients is DeWayne McCulley, Death to Diabetes (2005).  Be prepared to do some work.  I advise my patients that they can usually turn around their numbers rather quickly, but the speed will entirely be based on the degree of effort they commit to improving their health.  More than likely, you will need to make some lifestyle modifications – these include making healthier food choices, adding some degree of physical activity to your daily regimen, and avoiding hazards that sabotage your efforts.

 

Dietary supplementation can make a huge improvement for most people.  One supplement that I am particularly excited about is TruFix from TruVision Health.  TruFix was actually developed for Type II diabetics, but they noted that all of the initial study participants lost weight, and so it is marketed as a weight loss and health promoting product.  I have had patients’ blood sugar levels begin to normalize within a few days of beginning supplementation with these products.  In my 10 years of practice, I haven’t seen anything this effective!
